Usage & Citations

Tracking the domains that power AI answers

Understanding Source Metrics

When an AI platform answers a question by browsing the web, it frequently cites the domains and URLs it used to construct that answer. GeoFlux tracks these source domains and provides two specific metrics to help you identify the most influential websites in your industry: Citations and Usage.

Citations

Definition: The Citations metric is the absolute, total number of times a specific source (domain or URL) was cited across all the AI responses for your tracked prompts.

If forbes.com is used as a reference link 45 times across a week of prompt tracking, its Citation count is 45.

Usage (Usage Percent)

Definition: The Usage metric represents the percentage of times a source is cited in an LLM response, out of all responses.

Note: Not every response provides a source. An AI might answer a query purely from its pre-training data without browsing the live web. Therefore, the Usage percentage tells you how frequently a specific domain is actively relied upon when the AI does provide an answer.

If you track 100 responses, and g2.com is cited in 20 of them, its Usage is 20%.

Actionable Takeaway

By sorting your Source tables by Usage or Citations, you can instantly identify the "kingmaker" publications, review sites, and blogs that are actively feeding the AI models their information. These are your absolute highest-priority targets for digital PR, backlinking, and content partnerships.
