Track competitors
Choose the brands you measure against, review suggestions, and read any brand's profile
In AI search the question is not only whether you are named, but who is named instead of you. The competitors you track are the yardstick for that: share of voice is measured against them, the Topics and Engines tabs break your position down against each one, and Brand Perception benchmarks you on the attributes buyers care about. Choose them deliberately.
Choosing your competitor set
Your plan sets how many competitors you can track, not counting your own brand:
| Plan | Competitors |
|---|---|
| Free | 3 |
| Starter | 4 |
| Growth | 9 |
A good set mixes two kinds of brand:
- Direct rivals: the brands you lose deals to today.
- Challengers AI already recommends: brands that keep appearing in your answers even if your sales team never meets them. In AI search they are competitors whether you agree or not.
On Free, track your three closest rivals. On Starter, three rivals and one challenger. On Growth, four to six rivals and two or three challengers. Check the Brands tab after the first week: it lists every brand your answers name, and is the best evidence of who you are really up against.
Changing the set changes share of voice overnight, with nothing changed in the answers. Make changes as dated decisions and pin a chart note on the day.
Adding competitors
Go to Competitors (under Project in the sidebar).
Add one yourself
- Click Add competitor.
- Enter the Primary brand name, in the shortest form people use ("HubSpot", not "HubSpot, Inc."), so mentions are recognized reliably.
- Optionally add Alternate names (up to 10), the Brand website, and Alternate websites (up to 10), so mentions under other spellings and citations of their other domains still count.
To change a competitor later, open its card's menu and choose Edit, or Remove to stop tracking it.
Suggested competitors
GEOflux suggests up to six brands you do not track yet:
- From your answers: the brands your answers mention most, with the number of answers naming each ("N mentions").
- From your market: right after setup, before you have answers, GEOflux researches your category and suggests the competitors it finds, marked Found from your market.
Your own brand, the brands you track or rejected, and brands that share a website with yours or with a tracked competitor are left out. Open a card's menu and choose Track to add it, or Reject so it is not suggested again. Nothing is tracked until you accept it.
At the limit
The page shows how many you use, for example 3 / 4 competitors tracked. At the limit, Add competitor is disabled, suggestions no longer offer Track, and Track in brand menus elsewhere reads Track (limit reached), until you remove a competitor or upgrade. See Billing and credits.
You can also track or untrack a brand from the Brands tab or an Appears alongside list, and track one from its profile. Only members who can edit, on a project with an active subscription, can change the set.
Projects with a shared report and no competitors
If a project has a shared report but tracks no competitors at all, GEOflux tracks the brands its answers mention most, up to 5 or your plan's limit if that is lower, so the report has something to compare against. It only does this while the list is empty, so competitors you remove stay removed as long as you keep at least one.
Brand profiles
Every brand the answers name has a profile, tracked or not. Open it with Open profile from a brand's menu on the Brands tab, in an Appears alongside list, or in the brands table on a source page.
For that one brand, over your period:
- Header: Mentions and Share of voice with their change against the previous period, Sentiment, the number of Prompts and Citing sources behind it, First seen and Last seen, a Your brand or Tracked label, and a link to its website.
- Mentions over time, in total or split by engine.
- A breakdown of its mentions by Engine, Persona or Topic. The Engine view hides while you filter to one engine, and the Persona view while you filter to one persona.
- Appears alongside: the brands most often named in the same answers. Click one to open its profile.
- Sources citing the brand: the domains cited in its answers, with citations, citation share and sentiment. For a competitor, this is a list of where its visibility comes from, and so of where you could earn yours.
If the brand is not tracked, Track as competitor adds it (within your plan's limit). The page keeps your period, brand, engine and persona filters; the All Brands breadcrumb takes you back to the Brands tab.
Reading the competition
- Share of voice shows who owns the conversation. Measure it vs. competitors for the race you chose, and vs. all brands to catch a brand you are not watching. See Share of voice.
- Where Competitors Are Cited and You Aren't, on the Sources tab, and Sources citing on a competitor's profile show where their visibility comes from. These are your highest-value outreach targets.
- Competitor breakdowns on the Topics and Engines tabs show the topics and engines where a specific competitor beats you.
- Brand Perception's benchmark shows the attributes a competitor is described better on. See Brand perception.
