Visibility & mentions
How often AI answers name your brand, as a share and as a count, and on how many of your prompts
Visibility answers the most basic question in AI search: are we showing up? It is the share of AI answers that name your brand. Mentions is the same thing as a count, and prompt coverage asks it per question instead of per answer. Together they tell you whether you are in the answer at all, before share of voice or sentiment say anything about how.
Visibility
Visibility = answers that name your brand / all answers in scope x 100
If 500 answers were collected for your prompts in the period and 120 of them name your brand, your visibility is 24%.
- It counts answers, not repetitions. An answer that names you three times counts once.
- The denominator is every completed answer in scope: every engine, every run and every active prompt in the period. Answers still being collected, and archived prompts, are left out.
- Filters narrow both sides. Visibility on Gemini only is your share of Gemini's answers; visibility on one topic is your share of that topic's answers.
- Personas are included by default. Without a persona filter, base answers and the answers for every active persona all count.
- One decimal, changes in points. The change against the previous period of the same length reads as a signed value, for example +2.3%, meaning percentage points: 10% to 12.3% reads +2.3%, not a 23% rise.
With one brand selected, the Visibility tab's lead shows that brand's visibility and its rank among your tracked brands. With All brands selected there is no single subject, so it shows the market leader and your gap to it, or your margin over the runner-up if you lead.
Mentions
Mentions = the number of answers that name your brand at least once
Visibility and mentions share a numerator: 120 mentions out of 500 answers is 24% visibility.
Mentions grows with how many prompts, engines and personas you track, so it is the right number for reach and the wrong one for comparisons. Use visibility to compare periods, engines or projects of different sizes; use mentions to say how often you actually came up.
The Mentions card on the Visibility tab opens By brand, with an Over time view. With All brands selected, its headline is the total across every tracked brand.
Prompt coverage
Prompt coverage = prompts on which your brand was named at least once / all prompts run in scope x 100
Visibility counts answers; prompt coverage counts questions. If you track 50 prompts and appear at least once on 30 of them in the period, your prompt coverage is 60%, however often you appeared on each.
Prompt coverage is almost always higher than visibility, because one appearance is enough to cover a prompt. Read the two together:
| Visibility | Prompt coverage | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| High | High | You are a default answer across your category. |
| Low | High | You appear on many questions, but not consistently. The engines know you; they do not reliably pick you. |
| Low | Low | Whole questions where you never appear. Find them in the Topics tab or the prompts table; they are your gap list. |
Reading visibility well
- Read it on non-branded prompts. Branded prompts name you, so they inflate the number. Set Branded vs Non-branded to Non-branded for the headline. See Organize your prompts.
- Read it over weeks. AI answers vary from day to day; a 30-day visibility over 50 prompts is solid, one day's is not. See How GEOflux works.
- Read it next to share of voice. Visibility can rise while share of voice falls, when AI starts naming more brands in every answer. See Share of voice.
- Low visibility is a list of places to work, not a verdict. The prompts where competitors appear and you do not show what to write, and the sources behind those answers show where to get mentioned.
