Share of voice

Your share of brand mentions against the rest of the field

Visibility tells you whether you show up. Share of voice tells you how much of the conversation you own: when AI names brands in your space, how often is it you? It is the number that shows whether you are gaining on your competitors or just riding a busier conversation.

Definition

Share of voice = answers that name your brand / sum of the answers that name each brand in the set x 100

As with mentions, a brand counts once per answer, however many times the answer names it.

Example: across your answers, your brand is named in 30, competitor A in 50 and competitor B in 20. Your share of voice against competitors is 30 / (30 + 50 + 20) = 30%. Like every percentage in GEOflux, it has one decimal.

Who you are compared with

A toggle sets the comparison set:

  • vs. competitors (the default): your brand plus the competitors you track. Use it to see how you stack up against the rivals you chose.
  • vs. all brands: every brand the answers name, tracked or not. Use it to see your share of the whole conversation, including brands you have not started tracking.

Your share vs. all brands is never higher than vs. competitors, because its denominator also counts every untracked brand.

The toggle sits in the lead of the Share of Voice tab, and above the share of voice figures on the Personas, Topics and Engines tabs, the prompts table, and a watchlist's details table. A few places have no toggle and always use vs. all brands: the Share of Voice column of the Visibility tab's Rankings, the Brands tab, and the Buyer Journey tab. Those can read lower than the Share of Voice tab on its default setting.

When you track no competitors

With no competitors, vs. competitors would compare your brand with itself and read 100% wherever you are named. So that option is disabled, with a warning explaining why, and share of voice is measured vs. all brands. Add competitors to compare against them. See Track competitors.

Reading share of voice

VisibilityShare of voiceWhat it usually means
UpUpYou are winning ground: named more often, and more often than the others.
UpDownThe conversation got busier. AI names more brands per answer, and others gained more than you.
DownUpFewer answers name brands at all, and you held your place better than the others.
DownDownYou are losing ground. Check which competitor gained, on which engine and topic.
  • Your competitor set shapes the number. Add a strong competitor and your share vs. competitors falls overnight, with nothing changed in the answers. Change the set deliberately and note the date with a chart note.
  • Check vs. all brands now and then. A brand you do not track can be taking share. The Brands tab lists every brand the answers name.
  • Read it on non-branded prompts. A branded prompt names a brand by design, which skews the split toward that brand.
