Chart notes

Pin context to a day so your team knows why a line moved

A chart note is a short comment pinned to a point on a chart: "Launched the new pricing page", "Press release went out", "Competitor cut prices". Every spike or drop raises the same question, what happened that day, and a note answers it for everyone who reads the chart later, including you in three months.

Where you can add notes

Notes work on these Overview charts:

  • Visibility: Visibility over time, Mentions and Prompt coverage.
  • Share of Voice and Sentiment Score.
  • Sources: Sources per mention, Top Domains, and the trend view of Citations by Domain Type.
  • Brands: Top Brands.
  • Personas: the brand comparison across personas.
  • Topics: Topic Distribution.
  • Engines: Engine trends.

On a chart over time, a note is pinned to a day and drawn as a dashed line with a badge above it. On a chart of bars or tiles, such as a By brand view, it is pinned to that bar or tile. The Buyer Journey tab and the prompt detail page do not take notes.

Adding a note

  1. Hover the day or bar you want to annotate. A + pin appears above it. Click the pin. On a chart over time you can also click anywhere on the plot; on bar charts a click focuses that brand, so use the pin.
  2. Type your note in the box ("What happened on this day?"). Notes are up to 280 characters.
  3. Choose whether to Show in shared reports. Off keeps it to your team.
  4. Click Add note, or press Cmd+Enter (Ctrl+Enter on Windows).

The note appears as a badge at that point; when a point has several notes, the badge shows the count. Hovering the point also shows its notes in the chart's tooltip.

Who sees notes

  • Your team. Notes belong to the project, so everyone with access to it sees them.
  • Shared reports. A note appears in shared reports only when Show in shared reports is on. Those notes carry an In shared reports label in the app, and readers see them read-only.

Editing and deleting

Click a note badge to open the notes on that point, then use the note's menu:

  • Edit changes the text or the shared-reports setting. Click Save when you are done.
  • Delete removes the note after a confirmation. It disappears for everyone on the project and cannot be undone.

Good practice

  • Note every change you make on purpose: a page published, a PR placement, a site migration, a robots.txt edit. AI visibility moves weeks after the work, and without a note nobody connects the two.
  • Note outside events too: a competitor launch, a news story, an engine update you read about.
  • Write it for a stranger. "Pricing page v2 live (/pricing)" beats "launch".
  • Agencies: turn on Show in shared reports for the work you did for the client. The report then explains its own movements.
